Chicago Cubs Jersey History: From the 1908 Champions to the 2016 Title

Two Titles, Then 108 Years

The Chicago Cubs won the World Series in 1907 and again in 1908, and then did not win another for 108 years. No club in American sport has a longer gap between championships, and no uniform carries more of that story than the blue pinstripe and the red C at Wrigley Field.

1907-1908: The Deadball Champions

The 1907 and 1908 Cubs were the best team in baseball, built on a rotation led by Mordecai "Three Finger" Brown and a double-play combination - Tinker to Evers to Chance - that became a poem before it became a legend. The 1908 club won 99 games and beat Detroit in the World Series. That was the last Cubs championship for over a century.

1914: Wrigley Field and the Ivy

Wrigley Field opened in 1914 as Weeghman Park and has been home ever since - the second-oldest ballpark in the majors. The ivy on the brick outfield wall went up in 1937, the scoreboard above centre field was built the same season and is still operated by hand, and the marquee at Clark and Addison is one of the most photographed signs in sport.

1969 and 1984: So Close

The 1969 Cubs led the National League East for most of the summer with Ron Santo, Billy Williams, Fergie Jenkins and Ernie Banks - Mr. Cub, who spent his entire 19-year career in Chicago and never played a postseason game. The 1984 club took a 2-0 lead in the NLCS against San Diego and lost three straight. Different teams, the same ending.

1984-1990: Ryne Sandberg and the Second Baseman's Era

Ryne Sandberg arrived in 1982 and became the best second baseman of his generation - nine Gold Gloves, ten All-Star selections and the 1984 National League MVP award. His #23 was retired in 2005 and he went into the Hall of Fame the same year, and the number 23 is still the jersey most Cubs fans name second, after Mr. Cub's 14.

2003: Five Outs Away

The 2003 Cubs were five outs from the World Series when the eighth inning of Game 6 came apart in Miami, and the season ended the next night. The image of that inning is the one every Chicago fan recognises, and it became the last obstacle before 2016.

2016: The Drought Ends in Cleveland

The 2016 Cubs won 103 games behind Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo, Javier Baez and Jon Lester, then went down three games to one to Cleveland in the World Series. They won Games 5 and 6, then took Game 7 in extra innings after a rain delay that stopped the whole sport. Chicago had its title, and the blue pinstripe has looked different ever since.

2026: Back in the Race

The 2026 Cubs spent the final week of the regular season chasing a second consecutive postseason trip, with Pete Crow-Armstrong - the National League MVP favourite - tied for the major league home run lead and closing on a 40-40 season. Whatever happens in the last week, the club is back where it spent most of the 2010s: in the conversation in late September.

Why Stitched Matters on a Cubs Jersey

Cubs blue reads because of the lettering. On a genuinely stitched jersey the name and number are tackle-twill sewn through the mesh, so they keep their raised edge and will not crack at the crease - the difference between a wearable throwback and a costume. Every jersey in our Cubs collection is stitched rather than printed.
