The Pilots Who Almost Never Were
The Brewers were born in the strangest way imaginable: as the Seattle Pilots, an expansion club that played exactly one season in 1969 before bankruptcy forced a midnight move to Milwaukee in 1970. Jim Bouton's landmark book "Ball Four" immortalized that chaotic Pilots summer, and suddenly Wisconsin - which had lost the Braves to Atlanta in 1966 - had baseball back.
Harvey's Wallbangers and the 1982 Run
The franchise found its soul in 1978 with a new identity: the ball-in-glove "MB" logo, navy and gold, and a slugging brand of baseball. By 1982 manager Harvey Kuenn's lineup was so powerful the city called them Harvey's Wallbangers. Robin Yount hit .331 and won his first MVP; Paul Molitor collected five hits in Game 1 of the World Series - the first man to do that in a Fall Classic game in 36 years. Milwaukee lost a classic seven-game Series to St. Louis, but a city had fallen in love.
Yount, the Streak, and the Modern Brewers
Yount won a second MVP in 1989 and was elected to Cooperstown a decade later, joined eventually by Molitor. The 1987 club opened the season 13-0, an MLB record for consecutive wins to start a year. Baseball returned to a modern home when Miller Park opened in 2001 with its fan-shaped roof and the beloved Bernie Brewer slide, and the new century brought a new kind of success: division titles in 2011, 2018, 2021, 2023 and 2024.
Christian Yelich and the 2026 Juggernaut
The modern era belongs to Christian Yelich, whose 2018 NL MVP campaign - a .326 average, 36 home runs and 22 stolen bases - carried the Brewers to within a game of the World Series. Now, with 85 wins and October's No. 1 seed, Milwaukee is the league's benchmark.
